Applied Science at Carterton Community College is a dynamic and practical course designed for students who want to explore science in real-world contexts. It blends the core principles of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with hands-on laboratory work, investigations, and research.
This course is ideal for learners who enjoy scientific enquiry and experimentation but prefer continual assessment rather than purely exam-based study. You will develop analytical, technical, and organisational skills through a wide range of experiments, case studies, and applied research tasks.
Applied Science is taught through real-life scenarios that connect directly to industry, medicine, and environmental science. The emphasis is on scientific understanding in action — learning how science works and why it matters.
“Applied Science allows students to see the impact of science on everyday life. It’s about curiosity, discovery, and developing the skills that make scientists invaluable in the modern world.”
Over the course of two years, you will explore how biological, chemical, and physical principles apply to everyday life and industry. You will investigate topics such as atomic structure, organic chemistry, cell biology, health science, and the behaviour of materials.
You will learn how to collect and analyse data accurately, evaluate scientific information, and communicate findings in a professional format. Laboratory-based work will develop your practical technique and attention to detail, while research assignments will strengthen your critical thinking and report-writing skills.
By the end of the course, you will be able to design, conduct, and evaluate scientific experiments — applying theory to real-world contexts such as medical diagnostics, environmental testing, or industrial production.
BTEC Applied Science provides a strong foundation for both higher education and employment. Many students progress to university courses such as Biomedical Science, Forensic Science, Nursing, Environmental Science, or Engineering.
The practical, technical, and analytical skills developed are also highly valued in laboratory work, research, and health professions. This course can lead to a wide range of scientific and technical careers including laboratory technician, research assistant, environmental consultant, or healthcare professional.
Assessment is through a mixture of internal and external units. Internal assessments include coursework tasks, laboratory investigations, and project work that demonstrate your ability to apply scientific principles. External assessments consist of written examinations and controlled tasks set by Pearson Edexcel.
All units are graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction, or Distinction*. This structure rewards consistent effort and progress, allowing you to showcase both theoretical understanding and applied competence.
