A Level Business at Carterton Community College gives you an inside look at how organisations are built, run, and grown.
You’ll learn what makes a successful entrepreneur, how major companies make strategic decisions, and how businesses respond to the changing economic environment.
This course develops your understanding of the real business world — from start-ups to global corporations — through engaging lessons, case studies, and analytical discussions. Whether you’re inspired by leadership, marketing, finance, or innovation, Business Studies will give you the knowledge and confidence to turn ideas into action.
You will explore four main themes that cover every aspect of business life.
Theme 1: Marketing and People – You will investigate how businesses meet customer needs, analyse the nature of markets, explore how firms gain competitive advantage, and study how people are managed and led.
Theme 2: Managing Business Activities – You will examine how organisations raise and manage finance, how they handle resources and operations, and how external influences such as the economy affect business activity.
Theme 3: Business Decisions and Strategy – You will learn how businesses set objectives, make decisions using data, grow sustainably, and adapt to change in a competitive market.
Theme 4: Global Business – You will consider how firms operate internationally, how globalisation shapes business strategy, how marketing differs across cultures, and the ethical implications of trading worldwide.
Throughout the course, you will analyse real case studies such as Apple, Innocent Drinks and Tesla, applying theory to genuine business decisions.
A Level Business provides a strong foundation for university study and professional careers. Students often progress to degrees in Business Management, Marketing, Accounting, Economics, Finance, Law or Human Resources.
Future careers include roles such as entrepreneur, financial analyst, marketing executive, project manager, business consultant, economist, or business teacher. The qualification also develops transferable skills in leadership, communication, organisation and decision-making that employers highly value.
This course follows the Edexcel 9BS0 specification. Assessment is through three external exams at the end of Year 13.
Paper 1 focuses on Marketing, People and Global Businesses and contributes 35 per cent of the qualification. Paper 2 explores Business Activities, Decisions and Strategy, also worth 35 per cent. Paper 3 investigates Business in a Competitive Environment and is based on a pre-released research theme, making up the final 30 per cent.
You will develop skills in evaluation, problem-solving, and data interpretation, preparing you for both higher education and professional settings.
