Health and Social Care at Carterton Community College offers an engaging and applied route into one of the most rewarding career sectors. This course provides a broad understanding of the principles that underpin health, social, and early years care, and the professional skills required to support people of all ages and backgrounds.
You will explore how individuals grow and develop across the life stages, how professionals communicate effectively, and how legislation and policy influence the care sector. The course also develops empathy, teamwork, and problem-solving — essential qualities for those interested in working with people in health, social care, or education.
The qualification combines theory and practical learning, linking classroom study to real-world scenarios. It suits students who are motivated by helping others and who want to build a strong foundation for a future career in care, health, or community work.
You will develop a deep understanding of how human growth and development affect wellbeing and how physical, intellectual, emotional, and social factors interact across the lifespan. You’ll learn about the responsibilities of health and social care professionals, including safeguarding, promoting equality, and maintaining confidentiality.
Through project work, you will design health promotion campaigns, evaluate health services, and reflect on professional values in practice. You’ll also explore the impact of social policy, psychology, and communication on health outcomes.
The course builds both academic and professional skills — preparing you to work compassionately, confidently, and competently with people in need of care and support.
This course provides an excellent foundation for further study or employment in the health and social care sector. Many students progress to higher education in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Paramedic Science, or Primary Education. Others go directly into apprenticeships or work in health, childcare, and social support services.
The communication, teamwork, and leadership skills developed are highly transferable, opening pathways into management, administration, and community engagement roles.
Assessment combines external examinations with internally assessed coursework. The externally examined units test your understanding of health and safety, equality and diversity, and human anatomy and physiology. Internally assessed units require you to complete assignments, case studies, and research projects that apply theory to practice.
Each unit is graded as Pass, Merit, Distinction, or Distinction*, rewarding consistent progress and effort. There is no final exam; achievement is based on ongoing performance across the two years.
