Qualification: Level 3 Certificate
Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel
Duration: 2 years
Entry Requirements: Minimum Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics
Level: 3 (equivalent to AS Level)
Core Mathematics, also known as Mathematics in Context, is designed for students who want to keep developing their mathematical skills beyond GCSE without taking a full A Level in Mathematics. The course focuses on how maths is used in real-life situations — from managing personal finance and interpreting data to analysing statistics and modelling everyday problems.
At Carterton Community College, Core Maths helps students apply maths confidently in academic, professional, and everyday contexts. It’s an ideal complement to subjects such as Business, Psychology, Geography, Biology, and Social Sciences. The emphasis is always on understanding, reasoning, and practical application rather than abstract theory.
“Core Maths is about confidence, curiosity, and real-world problem solving. It helps students see the relevance of mathematics beyond the classroom and prepares them for the challenges of modern life.”
You will explore mathematical ideas through applied, contextual learning. Topics include data analysis and statistical techniques used in business, health and social sciences; probability and risk assessment for decision making; personal and financial mathematics such as taxation, loans, and investments; estimation and modelling for real-world problems; and critical analysis of data presented in the media.
You will also learn how to use spreadsheets, graphs, and digital tools to model scenarios and present findings — developing the confidence to use mathematics to solve authentic challenges. The course emphasises reasoning, communication, and fluency in interpreting information.
Core Maths enhances any career path that requires confident numeracy and data literacy. It strengthens applications for university courses where statistical reasoning is essential, including Business, Psychology, Geography, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, and Economics.
Students who complete Core Maths often progress to careers in data analysis, finance, accountancy, business management, psychology, logistics, and education. The qualification also provides valuable preparation for apprenticeships and employment requiring practical problem-solving and decision-making.
This qualification follows the Pearson Edexcel 7MC0 specification. Assessment consists of two externally examined papers at the end of Year 13. Each paper is worth 50 per cent of the qualification and tests the application of mathematics to real-world data, critical problem solving, and quantitative reasoning.
The course places strong emphasis on the use of mathematical understanding to interpret authentic information rather than performing lengthy abstract calculations. There is no coursework component.
