A Level Physics is widely regarded as one of the most respected academic qualifications. It demands resilience, precision, and curiosity — and rewards you with deep understanding, practical expertise, and transferable skills in reasoning, data analysis, and problem-solving.

You will study six core modules across the two years. These include Foundations of Physics, which develops your essential measurement and mathematical skills; Forces and Motion, which investigates Newton’s laws and dynamics; and Electrons, Waves and Photons, which introduces the fascinating world of particle and quantum physics.
In the second year, you will explore Newtonian World and Astrophysics, which connects classical mechanics with space science, and Particles and Medical Physics, which reveals how physics supports innovation in medicine and technology.
Practical investigation is integral. You will learn to design experiments, record and analyse data, and evaluate sources of uncertainty. These investigations will develop both your scientific thinking and your independence as a learner.
A Level Physics is a gateway to some of the most exciting and future-focused careers available. It is essential for degree courses in Physics, Engineering, and Astrophysics, and highly desirable for Medicine, Architecture, Computer Science, and Mathematics.
The skills you develop — problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, and analytical precision — are highly sought after by employers in sectors such as technology, energy, finance, aerospace, and research. Physics graduates are known for their ability to innovate and think critically about complex problems.
Assessment is through three externally examined papers: Modelling Physics and Exploring Physics (each 37 per cent of the qualification) and Unified Physics (26 per cent). All papers assess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
In addition, you will complete the Practical Endorsement in Physics, which certifies your competence in experimental technique. Although this endorsement does not contribute to the A Level grade, it is essential for entry to science and engineering-related university courses.
