Teaching and Learning
At Carterton Community College, our approach to teaching and learning is rooted in clarity, consistency, and a deep commitment to every student’s success. Our classroom practice is guided by a set of non-negotiables that ensure all students—regardless of ability, background, or need—experience engaging, inclusive, and high-quality learning every day.
We believe that great teaching begins with quality first teaching: lessons that are carefully planned, appropriately challenging, and thoughtfully adapted to meet the needs of all learners. Through consistent use of modelling, chunking, and scaffolding, teachers break down complex ideas, making learning accessible while still maintaining high expectations.
Every lesson is designed with purpose. Clear learning intentions help students understand not just what they are learning, but why it matters. Structured starts, such as “Do Now” activities (DNA), ensure immediate engagement and early success, while ongoing assessment allows teachers to respond in real time—adapting teaching, addressing misconceptions, and providing meaningful feedback that supports progress.
Our classrooms are inclusive by design. Visual supports like task boards and carefully considered seating plans help all students—particularly those with SEND, disadvantaged backgrounds, or high prior attainment—navigate learning with confidence. Predictable routines and clear expectations create a sense of security, allowing students to focus fully on their learning.
Equally important is the environment in which learning takes place. We prioritise a positive, respectful culture where students are welcomed, valued, and supported. Consistent routines—from calm, purposeful starts to orderly lesson endings—help establish a space where students feel safe, ready to learn, and proud of their work.
At Carterton Community College, our approach is not about limitation—it is about empowerment. By being clear, consistent, and child-centred, we create classrooms where all students can thrive, achieve, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Matt Maudsley
In every lesson, in every classroom, we all work together to make learning the best it can be.
We know what great learning looks like—and we take an active part in it.
This means being ready, being involved, and being proud of what we achieve.
Everyone has a voice—be ready to share your ideas
Think first, then discuss, then share
Listen carefully to others and build on their ideas
Keep track of your progress using task boards
Show what you have learned
Try your best—even when it feels challenging
Use green pen to check and correct
Learn from mistakes—they help us get better
Act on feedback to improve
Take learning step by step
Think for ourselves before asking for help
Keep going, even when things are tricky
Present work neatly and clearly
Look after our books and equipment
Be proud of our progress
Use mini-whiteboards to share ideas
Be honest about what we know (and don’t know yet!)
Learn using both words and images
