Criminology explores crime, why it happens and how society responds to it. Drawing on ideas from psychology, sociology and law, students investigate different types of crime, consider theories of criminal behaviour and examine how the criminal justice system works in practice.
The course is highly applied. Students will explore how perceptions of crime are shaped, analyse explanations for criminal behaviour, investigate the journey from crime scene to courtroom, and consider how crime is controlled and punished. Alongside developing subject knowledge, students build important skills in research, analysis, evaluation, decision-making and extended writing.
Criminology is particularly suited to students who are curious about why people commit crime, how crime is investigated, and how justice is delivered. It provides a strong foundation for further study in areas such as criminology, policing, law, psychology, sociology, criminal justice and related social sciences.

Criminology explores why crime happens, how it is investigated and how society responds to criminal behaviour. You will study different types of crime, consider why some crimes are under-reported and explore how public perceptions of crime are shaped.
You will also examine major criminological theories, investigate how evidence is used from crime scene to courtroom, and consider the role of agencies such as the police, courts and prison service. Throughout the course, you will develop skills in research, analysis, evaluation, decision-making and extended writing.

Criminology provides excellent preparation for further study and careers connected with crime, justice, society and human behaviour.
Students may progress to university courses such as Criminology, Law, Psychology, Sociology, Policing, Criminal Justice, Forensic Psychology and related social sciences. The course can also support progression towards careers within areas such as the police, probation service, prison service, youth justice, social work, legal services, safeguarding and public services.
The analytical, research and communication skills developed through Criminology are also valuable across a wide range of university courses, apprenticeships and professional careers.

How You'll be assessed
The Eduqas/WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Criminology is assessed through a combination of internally assessed controlled assessment and external examinations.
The course contains four units:
Changing Awareness of Crime – internally assessed
Criminological Theories – externally assessed examination
Crime Scene to Courtroom – internally assessed
Crime and Punishment – externally assessed examination
This combination allows you to demonstrate your understanding through both structured written examinations and applied investigative tasks.
